It is understandable why the Annapurna region in central Nepal is one of the world's most popular trekking locations. Trekkers can enjoy terraced slopes, gushing glacial rivers, rhododendron woods, towering snow-capped peaks, and a diverse blend of Gurung, Magar, and Thakali cultures in a comparatively small region. The Annapurna region offers paths for almost any type of traveller, from a leisurely trek to a strenuous circuit, in contrast to some high-altitude regions that need weeks of dedication and considerable climbing experience. Four of the best treks in the Annapurna region are discussed below.
Best Treks in the Annapurna Region
Annapurna Base Camp Trek

For good reason, the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek is perhaps the most famous walk in the area. Trekkers travel through verdant forests, charming villages, and striking river valleys before reaching a natural amphitheater encircled by some of the world's highest peaks: Annapurna I (8,091m), Machapuchare (Fishtail), Hiunchuli, and Gangapurna, all of which rise directly above the base camp.
The sheer diversity of landscapes crammed into a comparatively short space is what makes this adventure unique. Before arriving at the glacier sanctuary at 4,130 meters, you will begin in subtropical lowlands, travel through dense rhododendron and bamboo forests (which will be stunning if you visit in the spring when the rhododendrons blossom), and ascend into an alpine zone. One of the most spectacular parts of Himalayan hiking is the last approach to base camp, which is surrounded by massive ice cliffs on all sides.
Usually starting from Jhinu, the trek passes past villages like Chhomrong, Dovan, Deurali, and MBC before reaching the ABC. This is a comfortable walk that doesn't require camping equipment because teahouses are accessible all along the way. Before descending, most hikers spend a night at base camp to take in the morning vistas. Although appropriate acclimatisation is still necessary above 3,000 meters, the risk of altitude sickness is quite low because the climb does not require crossing any high passes.
Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek
The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is the ideal option for those with limited time or seeking a milder introduction to Himalayan hiking. This trek, which usually takes 10 days to complete, is renowned for offering some of Nepal's best mountain views without demanding technical difficulties or high-altitude stamina.
The trail travels through some of the most charming settlements on the slopes of the Annapurna, such as Tikhedhunga, Ulleri, and Ghorepani. The pre-dawn ascent to Poon Hill (3,210m), which provides an astounding 180-degree vista of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, including Annapurna South, Nilgiri, Machapuchare, and Dhaulagiri I, the seventh-highest mountain in the world, is the trek's high point. Watching the first rays of sunlight hit these peaks is an experience many trekkers describe as the highlight of their entire trip to Nepal.
Beyond the scenery, this walk is well-liked for its stone-paved paths through dense oak and rhododendron forests, which turn vivid shades of pink and scarlet in March and April, when blooms are at their height. Trekkers can get a personal look at the hospitality, cuisine, and customs of the traditional Gurung and Magar towns along the trail, which also provides significant cultural exposure. Because the journey stays below 3,300 meters and comprises comfortable daily walking distances of four to six hours, it's an ideal option for families, first-time trekkers, or anyone wanting a taste of the Himalayas without committing to weeks on the path.
Mardi Himal Trek
The region's rising star is the Mardi Himal Trek , a relatively unknown path that has seen tremendous growth in popularity over the past ten years due to its breathtaking up-close views of Machapuchare (Fishtail Mountain) and a notably quieter track than its more well-known neighbours.
The journey takes 10 days, climbs steadily through deep forest until emerging onto a thin alpine ridge that goes directly to Mardi Himal Base Camp (around 4,500 meters). The intimacy of the mountain views is what makes this trek unique. Because the trail follows a narrow spur, hikers can get remarkably close, unhindered views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machapuchare's dramatic fishtail-shaped summit without having to cross a large glacial basin.
There are less people, more seclusion, and a greater sense of wilderness because of the trek's relative obscurity, at least when compared to ABC or the Annapurna Circuit. The raw charm of the journey is enhanced by the teahouses that have grown up along the route in recent years, albeit they are still simpler than those on more established treks.
Even while the trek doesn't reach very high altitudes, the highest parts, above the treeline, can be exposed, windy, and chilly, so appropriate gear and layering are crucial. Mardi Himal is perfect for hikers looking for a modest but nonetheless breathtaking walk in a shorter amount of time, or for those who have already completed the traditional routes and want a new, less-traveled route.
Annapurna Circuit Trek
No list of Annapurna treks would be complete without the famed Annapurna Circuit - generally regarded among the top long-distance treks in the world. A 15-day journey, the classic circuit encircles the entire Annapurna massif, transporting trekkers through an incredible mix of climates, civilizations, and terrains.
The passage of Thorong La Pass, one of the highest trekking passes on Earth at 5,416 meters, is what distinguishes the trek. The trek begins in the lush, humid lowlands around Besisahar, climbs steadily through Manang's high-altitude Tibetan-influenced towns, over the pass into the austere, desert-like scenery of Mustang, and drops into the sacred pilgrimage site of Muktinath. Along the way, trekkers pass through more than a dozen distinct ecological and cultural zones, making it feel less like a single trek and more like an epic overland journey through several different worlds.
While road building has reduced certain sections of the traditional route in recent years, the Circuit remains an unsurpassed experience for trekkers seeking variety, cultural depth, and genuine high-altitude adventure. Proper acclimatization is necessary given the tremendous elevation of Thorong La, and most itineraries build in rest days at Manang to reduce the risk of altitude sickness. This hike is best suited to people with prior trekking experience, good physical fitness, and enough time to truly appreciate its scale.
Which Trek is Right for You?
Each of these treks has something unique to offer: the Annapurna Circuit gives an epic, multi-week journey through different landscapes; Poon Hill offers accessible panoramic sunrises; Mardi Himal offers isolation and up-close views of peaks; and ABC offers magnificent mountain sanctuaries.
Whichever trek you choose, the Annapurna region promises some of the most gratifying trekking experiences anywhere in the world. Let us know where you want to go, and we will take you there.
