Most pilgrims who write to us about Kailash have been dreaming about it for years, sometimes decades. Then the practical questions arrive all at once: How much will it cost? Which visa do I need? What if the border closes? At ABC and EBC Nepal Trekking Adventure, we have spent our time in the Himalayas helping travellers handle exactly these questions, so here is the plain version for 2027, without sales talk.

What does the Kailasha Manasarovar Yatra 2027 cost?

Prices of the yatra vary a lot by route, group size, hotel standard and nationality, so treat the figures below as realistic planning ranges, not a quote.

Overland from Kathmandu (via Kerung/Gyirong) - This is the budget-friendly route. The price ranges for foreign travellers run from about USD 2,200 to 3,400 per person for 10 to 14 days. Indian pilgrims travelling in groups have been quoted lower, with a 10-day Kerung package reported at around USD 1,700 in 2026, up from USD 1,500 the year before. Check out Kailash Mansarovar Yatra (via Kerung)

Flight and helicopter via Simikot and Hilsa- This is the shorter, more comfortable option, but more expensive. Expect roughly USD 3,500 to 4,500 per person, because it involves flights to Nepalgunj and Simikot plus a helicopter transfer to the border. Helicopter rates were being re-quoted in 2026 after fuel price rises, so do not trust an old price list.

Kailash Manasrovar Yatra via Lhasa - This route needs you to fly to Lhasa from Kathmandu and drive to Manasarovar. The price of the package starts from USD 2700 onwards.

Luxury departures with better hotels and smaller groups can go above USD 4,000 and into the USD 5,000 to 6,000 range.

What is usually included?

  • Visa and all Tibet permits arranged by the operator
  • Meals during the Kailash Yatra
  • Transport in Nepal and Tibet, guesthouse or hotel stays, and meals
  • English-speaking guide and Tibetan guide
  • Oxygen bottles and basic medical kit on many departures

What is usually not included?

  • International flights and your Nepal visa
  • Travel insurance (mandatory for this trip)
  • Tips, personal expenses, and extra nights in Kathmandu
  • A budget of roughly USD 25 to 60 in cash for small personal costs is sensible

One more cost to plan for: if you need to arrive early or stay longer in Kathmandu, add those hotel nights yourself. Most pilgrims arrive two to four days early, which also helps with paperwork.

Visa and permits: the part that confuses everyone

You cannot walk into Tibet on your own. Kailash is in a restricted region, and foreign visitors must travel with a licensed operator. In practice, the paperwork comes down to these items:

  • Chinese visa. Traditionally, travellers entering Tibet from Nepal needed a Chinese Group Visa, issued in Kathmandu for the whole group. Rules have been shifting: some 2026 sources say the special group visa was dropped for many nationalities, while others still treat it as mandatory, and one reported a minimum group size of five. So the right answer depends on your passport and the current rules.
  • Tibet Travel Permit (TTP). Only a licensed agency can apply for it.
  • Alien's Travel Permit. Required for restricted areas, including the Kailash region.
  • Military or border permit for the Ngari area where Kailash and Mansarovar sit.

Two practical warnings. First, if you travel on a group visa, an existing Chinese visa in your passport is typically cancelled, even a multi-year one. Do not apply for a new Chinese visa yourself before speaking to us. Second, once you are inside Tibet, you cannot separate from your group or change your route.

Indian passport holders have a different situation again, since the government-run yatra and the private route via Nepal follow different procedures. If you hold an Indian, NRI or OCI document, tell us at the start.

Documents Checklist

Gather these early, because permits take time and nobody can speed up the Chinese side:

  • Passport valid for at least six months beyond your trip, with at least two blank pages
  • Clear scans of your passport information page, and several passport-size photos
  • Your occupation details, since permit forms ask for them
  • Travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation
  • A doctor's fitness note, especially if you are over 60 or have heart, blood pressure, or breathing conditions
  • Printed and digital copies of everything, kept separately from the originals
  • Nepal visa (available on arrival in Kathmandu for most nationalities; Indian citizens are exempt)

Your original passport usually has to be submitted in Kathmandu for the visa and permit process, so plan your arrival around it.

Age, fitness and the altitude question

Dolma La Pass(5630m), the highest point of Kailash Manasarovar Yatra

Kailash is not a casual holiday. You will spend days above 4,500 metres, and the Kailash kora crosses the Dolma La pass at around 5,630 metres. Many operators report that Chinese authorities do not allow pilgrims over 70, so please check this before you book rather than after.

Start walking now. Regular hill walks, stair climbing and breathing exercises make a real difference. Talk to your doctor about altitude medication, pack warm layers, and accept that facilities near Mansarovar and on the kora are basic. Guesthouses are simple, toilets are basic, and that is part of the journey. Read the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra 2027 Preparation Guide.

How to book without regret

  • Ask what is confirmed. A good operator will tell you what is certain, what is not, and when they will know more.
  • Read the cancellation terms first. Look for free rescheduling, a clear deposit amount, and what happens if the route or season is cancelled by the authorities.
  • Do not buy non-refundable flights early. Wait until your departure is confirmed.
  • Pick the route that suits your body, not just your budget. Overland gives gradual acclimatisation. The helicopter route saves time but moves you up quickly.
  • Choose a full moon departure if it matters to you. Many pilgrims value a full moon night at Lake Mansarovar, and those dates fill first.
  • Travel responsibly. Carry out your waste, respect local customs, and support local guides and lodges.
